I’d love to hear about a day in their life! 9:00 PM: Dreamer gets out of bed and goes to the food station. After eating a bit, she goes in search of treats. She’ll run on the wheel as well. 9:30 PM: Ink is generally still asleep or curled up in the sleeping pouch with the babies. I come in to play with everyone. Ink will get up after fifteen minutes or so. The joeys will come out as well. I’ll play with everyone for an hour or so. 10:30 – 7:00 AM: I’m generally asleep for most of this, but they will run around the cage, forage for toys, take naps in their pouch, run on their wheel, groom each other, eat and glide. They go to bed when it gets light, around 7 right now. 🙂
How old do they live to be? In captivity, sugar gliders can live to be fifteen years old, if they are taken care of well and have a good diet. 🙂
Where do sugar gliders usually live in the wild? They can live around nine years in the wild.
How much do they weigh? Oh man! The “ideal” weight for males is 100-160 grams, and females 80-130 grams. BUT it varies a lot. Both of mine are on the smaller side and underweight. 🙄 Dreamer is only 66 grams and Ink is only 76. I’ve been working on helping them gain weight in a healthy way (not with a bunch of sugary treats). 🙂
What do you like about sugar gliders? I love their affection for their owners. I love how they grow to trust you and how they will get super excited to see you. And, of course, they are ADORABLE!
Do they have their own individual personality? YES. That’s another thing that I like about them. Dreamer is super outgoing. She’s super fast, loves to explore and will go into unknown places without hesitation. Ink, on the other hand, is MUCH more cautious. He’s also much more cuddly and loves to hang out with me.
What are the pros and cons of owning gliders? Pros: You have a very affectionate pet. They live for a long time. They are also good for allergies as they don’t shed and don’t require bedding or feeding materials that commonly cause allergies (such a timothy grass, etc.). They are intelligent. You can carry them around. 😉 Cons: They bite. They are very expensive. They are very sensitive and take a lot of research to care for properly. (The research part isn’t really a con for me ’cause I love it, but it does take a lot of time.)
Do they have any funny tendencies? They bark, and it sounds a LOT like a dog. XD The first time I heard it, I was like, “Whhaaa?”
That’s happened the past two nights, haha! First one of the joeys and then Dreamer.
They have a wide variety of sounds, which are all very unique. 🙂
