I’ve basically avoided trimming my glider’s nails because 1) they’re tiny 2) they have veins in them 3) I’d never done it before.
I bought a sandy branch that helped to keep their nails filed down, but recently they’ve been catching on things and that can be dangerous for them. So it was time to do the dreaded trimming.
I already had some awesome nail trimmers. They’re super sharp, so that helps. I watched a few YouTube videos and read up on nail trimming and then attempted to do it.
I started with Ink because he is more tame and doesn’t mind being held as much. I gave him a treat and wrapped him up in a piece of fleece. While he was busy eating, I was able to get a hold of his back foot and trim the nails without much trouble. The hardest thing was trying to grip his foot with my non-dominant hand while trimming with the other. I actually found that trimming his front “hands” was much easier.
Next came Dreamer. I was nervous about her because she doesn’t like to be handled, squirms much more and BITES with her incredibly sharp little teeth. I gave her a treat to keep her busy and then started trimming. Amazingly, she didn’t try to bite me at all during the whole process. She squirmed around a lot more than Ink (and was way less interested in the treat) but it all went very well.
First Impression: It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I would have done it a lot earlier if I had known it was that easy. XD
