Many of you already know about my gliders, but I realized that I’ve never done an official post introducing you all to my babies. 😉 Today you’ll get to meet all four of them and hear a bit of the story behind them and their names.
Ink and Dreamer are my first and original pair. I got them early in 2020 from a small breeder in Tennessee. They were a breeding pair. Ink is now neutered because I decided I didn’t want to breed anymore. No more stress!
Ink
Good ol’ Inky boy. He’s my snuggly baby. I have a deep suspicion that he is the sweetest glider alive. He loves to be held and pet. He is incredibly gentle. When Dreamer had joeys, he was an amazing father. He would always hang out in the nest with the babies while Dreamer went out to get food and exercise.
When I first got him, Ink was incredibly curious about everything. I named him Inquisitive and shortened it to Ink. I love the irony of his name because he is completely white.
Ink is a leucistic.
Dreamer
Dreamer has boundless energy and a personality to match! She’s always the first up at night. When I come near the cage, she’ll run up and down the bars and wait impatiently until I open them up. Then she’ll run all over me and crawl down my shirt for five seconds before bounding up again to explore the room. She is very vocal and doesn’t hesitate to express her annoyance…. or her delight with chirps and purring.
She and I have made a lot of progress in our bonding over the past few months. Originally, she was fairly skittish and didn’t like people very much. It’s been amazing to watch her grow in trust and to be excited to see me.
When I got the gliders, I was writing a novel and the main character’s name was Dream. I decided to use a lengthened version for my glider. I also loved the idea of learning to dream again and to find joy and to find the whimsy childlike imaginings that I’d lost.
Dreamer is a silver mosaic (also known as a platinum colored mosaic).
Yiska and Ilona are rehomes. They came me to in April 2021. They are beauties and I’m so glad that I got to have them in my life.
Yiska
Yiska is a big, shy boy. Despite the fact that he’s the largest of all of my gliders, he is very gentle and is the least likely to assert any type of dominance. He’s cautious, quiet and loves to blend into the darkness. I’m working hard on trying to bond with him and hoping that over the next few months, he’ll learn to trust me. ❤ He’s made so much progress in our bond over the past couple months.
His name means end of night. It is a beautiful Navajo name. The beginning of 2021 was really hard for me. When I was looking for names, I knew that I wanted something to remind me that darkness won’t last – that every night has a morning. Yiska was perfect.
Yiska is a white face blonde.
Ilona
Ah, little but fierce! Ilona has the fiery spirit and determination of Dreamer along with the curiosity and love of people that Ink has. Within one day of having her, she was already coming to me of her own accord and happily crawling on my arm and attempting to chew on my hair. LOL. She is determined to be the dominant one and makes sure that Yiska knows it.
Ilona is a Hungarian name that means light. Like I said above, I was searching for names that would remind me that pain and hardship doesn’t last. Ilona is a beautiful name with a wonderful reminder attached to it. I love how well it goes with Yiska’s name, as well. He reminds me that night comes to an end; she reminds me that light comes after the night. ❤
Ilona is a luesistic.
And there you have it! Those are my four babies. For now they are in separate cages, but it shouldn’t be too long until I start attempting to introduce them. I’ll have more to say on that in other posts!
